AGO (Amateur
Golfers of Orlando) is the oldest amateur golf organization in the
Greater Orlando area. AGO was established in 1971 by Gordy Gibb and
Sandy Sanderson, two leaders who are well known to many Orlando
golfers.
The goal of AGO
was, and is, to provide an avenue for avid amateur golfers to
compete with one another on some of the finest golf courses in the
Greater Orlando area. Through the years AGO has been privileged to
have been led by golfers like George Stevenson, Hank Hardy, Tom
Pill, “Doc” Moore, John Coen, Rick Harris and Joe Wingerter to name
just a few. Their leadership has enabled AGO to exist, and expand
its membership and reputation.
AGO plays
tournament golf once a month, usually on the third Sunday.
Exceptions are when the third Sunday conflicts with holidays or
other major events such as the Bay Hill Classic, etc. When that is
the case, we will usually play on either the second or fourth
Sunday, whichever is most suitable. AGO’s golf year culminates in
April of each year when we have our Annual Championship, a two-day
tournament (Saturday and Sunday) on two of the premier golf courses
in the Orlando area. Our May tournament is followed by a luncheon
on-site and an awards ceremony where the top golfers in the
Championship and the golf year are recognized.
All of our golf
tournaments are handicapped. All of our golfers are flighted based
on their handicaps. Golfers will compete with others that have
similar handicaps. Each flight has six winners. One golfer will
win the overall “low gross score” and another will win “low net
score” for the entire field. Winners receive “certificates” in lieu
of cash, that can be redeemed in several of Orlando’s top retail
establishments and golf course pro shops.
During each
tournament there are several optional games that can be entered.
Check on the link “games” for a description of each of these games.
If you love golf
and are an avid golfer that enjoys competition as we all do, give
one of our “Board Members” a call for more information, or simply
print the application that is contained in the “join us” link and
send it in. You’ll be eligible to play in our next tournament.
We’ll enjoy having you as a member, and you’ll enjoy some of the
finest golfing competition available locally. |
